Vienna Teng’s nightingale warble recalls other folk-influenced pop sing-songwriters like Ingrid Michaelson and the Weepies, but the 29-year-old California native sets herself apart with her delicate arrangements and smart, concise lyrics. Her latest record, Inland Territory, is a concept album about about geopolitics and rebellion, about growing up as the daughter of strict Taiwanese immigrants and the troubles and lessons that grew from her unique experiences. Teng’s tender vocals and dreamy piano will sail you to a calmer sea — a soft swim for this optimistic and uncompromisingly personal young talent, with so much beauty just below the surface.
