Toubab Krewe
Some music cannot be found on a map or within iTunes categories. Some music is so original it seems snatched from the great, invisible substrata that runs below all human activity, a sound aching to be born without a flag or fixed allegiance free, questing, overflowing with immediate, tangible life. This is the music of Toubab Krewe, the vibrant Asheville, NC-based instrumental powerhouse that creates a sonic Pangaea that lustily swirls together rock, African traditions, jam sensibilities, international folk strains and more. While nearly impossible to put into any box, it takes only a few moments to realize in a very palpable way that one is face-to-face with a true original who recognizes no borders in a march towards a muscular, original, globally switched-on sound.

Formed in 2005, Toubab Krewe has tenaciously honed their craft through relentless touring and a fierce dedication to carving out something they can truly call their own. The fruits of this hard work can be heard on their scintillating new long-player, TK2, being released September 7, 2010 on Nat Geo Music. What Justin Perkins (Kora, Kamelngoni, guitar, percussion), Teal Brown (drums, congas), Drew Heller (guitar, piano, fiddle), David Pransky (bass, guitar), and Luke Quaranta (Djembe, percussion) have wrought on TK2 reflects the many miles and musical journeys that have transpired since their studio debut. “It’s five years later since our last studio album, and we’ve been doing almost nothing but playing together,” says Drew Heller. “We’ve had a lot of time to further our musical relationships. I feel like this album was recorded at a really perfect time. The last track on the new album is an improvisation that was the very first sounds captured, and other things came out of that initial rush.” This process of recording in the spirit and sifting for gold afterwards mirrors the Beastie Boys approach during the creative peak that produced Check Your Head and The In Sound From Way Out! Toubab Krewe exhibits a similar take-no-prisoners singularity in their work.

This is a band that actively draws inspiration from whatever source floats into their purview, something they’ve exhibited in their half decade of heavy gigging, including regular appearances at major U.S. festivals like Bonnaroo, High Sierra, Rothbury and Wakarusa, and abroad at such legendary gatherings as Festival In The Desert in Mali. Their globe-hopping propensity has made them an emerging headliner at their hometown’s famous Orange Peel and a familiar face as similar venues throughout the country. Whether on their own or collaborating with luminaries like the Last Poets’ Umar Bin Hassan or Uncle Earl’s Rayna Gellert, Toubab Krewe has already earned the attention and respect of a broad musical community. Toubab carries echoes of African greats like Ali Farka Toure, Orchestra Baobab and Salif Keita, no doubt picked up during the group’s many visits to the Mother Continent to study and live in Guinea, Ivory Coast and Mali. What differentiates Toubab Krewe from other Statesiders inspired by African music is how they innovate on what they’ve learned, not simply recreating tradition but carving out a new trail that honors the African originators they admire by making something alive and contemporary that moves the line forward, something that’s easy to pick up on with TK2. “We had a month and a half in the studio, and we were able to relax and play, almost a smudging process getting the energy in the right place,” says Heller. “The time we had to record this album was conducive to not worrying about anything and just having fun, playing and getting into the creative process.” From the ragtime piano tinged opener “Mariama” to the percussion fueled, slide guitar glide of “Gine Fare” to the subtle, inviting African echoes of “Konkoba” to the hypnotic, psychedelic slow burn of “Holy Grail,” TK2 reveals Toubab Krewe to be rare innovators in a modern age often too ready to settle for more of what’s been. Toubab Krewe is happily an exception to this rule, and those willing to take the journey with them are in for one hell of a cool, exciting ride.

The handpan is a rare new instrument made of two metal pans joined together. It has tuned indentations somewhat like a steel drum. Ed is one of the few players composing music for handpan, and he is a talented improviser too.

We are composing and improvising music together. I am contributing musical guitar sounds that I developed in the Affective Immersion Project, which treats the guitar as an advanced psychological tool.

Matthew Morgan “curated” the show we played at the Flat Iron First Friday event this month. He said “Amazingly talented handpan player Edgar Castellan and Chicago guitar legend Ron Scroggin are a dynamic duo, creating a sound that is beautiful and otherworldly.”

Willa Moore, singer-songwriter who heard the show said “The songs are beautiful jewels, they are like sonnets. Ron and Edgar are sensitive players.”

Valerie Gabrielle, singer-songwriter at the show said “The song that you improvised – Whoa! That was awesome. I was thinking man, I wish someone was recording you guys.”

Edgar and I say that our music fills the shape of the space it is in, like water.

The Cinema Du Cannes Project is a school year long venture taking High School
Children through the process of filmmaking from conception to completion. This is
all done with the intent of submitting their film and being accepted to the Cannes Film

Don’t be scared off by our name.

Bad Omen Studios actually has a lot of good vibes associated with it. We’re a home studio in Uptown that is equipped with a full drum set and plenty of recording equipment. And we want to help local musicians!

We’ve recorded both full bands and singer/songwriters. And we’ll help mix your music as well to make it sound clean and professional. We have samples of music we’ve recorded and mixed available by request and are more than happy to share contact information of people we have worked with. (Trust us, they only say nice things.)

But more importantly, we are a studio that is musician-centric. Recording can be a frustrating and stressful experience, but not when we do it. We’ll work with you to keep you focused and keep the mood light.

So why the name “Bad Omen”? Suffice to say that there were plenty of bad signs when we got started, including having a pair of monitor speakers burst into flames during one recording session. But we overcame the random bad luck and have realized that even in the face of the worst omens, good things can come of it. (The song from that session actually turned out great.)

Fix Mouse-over Color on All Thumbnails

Right now the Text on the thumbnails is showing up in the lighter gray. We would like it to stay the darker gray the between mouse-overs. We would also like to fix the issue with mouse-over timing on different sections of the thumbnail and overlay. It is also only clicking to post page on the overlay and a pop up on the image. We would like both to click to the post page.

Currently the ratings display near the bottom of the post above the comments. We would like the ratings to appear just under the posts feature image near the top of the page. We would also like them to be bigger, just show the stars not the txt, and fill in a blue color matching. We are also interested in the option of the “LIKE” – heart feature that other websites have – it seems to be like a web wide thumbs up. Any ideas? Are you able to recode this feature?

The name of the artist is written in the post title and we want it to automatically pair a google search to display the top link to facebook, youtube, artist site, lyrics etc.

We are currently using Google CSE to implement this on the site, but we can not figure out how to provide only 1 result automatically generating the search term from the php “artist name” on the post page.

So the genre is called “Chip Tunes” and it involves hacking something (like a Nintendo System in the case of Anamanaguchi) and composing something directly on that device. Anamanaguchi then plays live with these sound samples. You might hear about this in Scott Pilgram vs. The World which is based on this type of 8-bit sound composition. There is a game , same title, for x-box based on this video and Anamanaguchi does the sound. Check it.

I was honored that Beth thought of me to help out with your logo, and also thrilled to be do a little work on a music-related project. Music is a constant part of my day while I’m working, and goes with me everywhere else too — on the train, at the grocery store, everywhere.

I took into consideration your sketch and came up with a solution, but with a few twists:
1. the earphoria sketched type that you sent as an example seemed a little light for the weight of the illustration, so I beefed it up a little. If it feels too heavy for you, we can tone it down.
2. you asked for a white or light gray text for the earphoria type — I felt that the light blue used in the illustration was the best option. I thought it would be optimal to choose a color that would differentiate the words from the white headphones, but gray didn’t compete very well with the bright blues and white.
3. I don’t seem to have the typeface that was used on the business card — I don’t think that will change anything for you, because I didn’t alter the type, but it might be an issue to consider when you send out the designs to be printed. The font is called TwCen (Bold and Regular versions).

One more thing — while I was messing around with the words, and trying to make them look like a twisted cord, a little idea popped into my head and I couldn’t help myself but to execute it and show it to you. I know that this Earphoria logo is already finalized and in use on your website, but it may work for a different project in the future perhaps. It’s attached as “Earphoria concept.”

On that note, I think I’ve covered everything for now. All of the illustrator files for both logos and the business card are zipped up together. I’ll be on a short vacation through Monday, so if you have feedback or would like me to continue with adjustments to your logo, I can take care of them when I come home next Tuesday.

So I apologize for my obnoxious perfectionism but … would love to see the headphones with the earphoria logo taking up full face of right side of headphone. id’ like to use these as actually promo headphones, so it would be great to see what the design looked like (still with texture you’ve got). I don’t like it so small, it looks weird to me. What do you guys think? Also would be interested in seeing a softer most sketched version. I really like what you have – and want to keep using it no doubt. But if I’m honest, my style is more vintage? Would just love to see what it would look like. You’ve really done a nice job on this. I think Kent might prefer the bottom left headphone cord earphoria.fm font, but I still like the top left a little more. could we try that font as a cord on the original circle headphones?

As for the circle. I’d still be curious to hear what you guys have to say about the earphoria.fm text on any of them. I am trying to decide if we should forgoe this as an option (putting earphoria.fm inside the circle for presenting it to listeners on a button etc.) Jess, please tell me when to let go but do you think you could shifting the earphoria.fm cord (on circle) around a little? it looks off to me, but i still like the idea. Maybe pulling the .fm down a little to have it exit the circle a little lower? Keeping it rounding equally around the chin and then swiveling the .fm a hint down. You can send me the photoshop file if you want me to take a stab at it. But I’m really happy with how you’ve incorporated the idea. On the card itself do you have any suggestions for making it more interesting? Or do you like it simple? might try the rough script font on the text and take the earphoria.fm cord outside of the circle to make it a larger font and seem like it’s trailing out a little. Might be cool to try taking out the circle and just having the headphone lines in blue.

Nico Vega Session

Taking a band from sunny Los Angeles and interviewing them in downtown Chicago on its coldest day in October wouldn’t usually get you very far. The only reason Earphoria got such an amazing interview is because of the band. Nico Vega had such an amazing outlook and turned the session into an adventure of walking, playing and laughing about the cold along Chicago’s bone-chilling streets.

The group sits in a courtyard by the Wrigley building, sings one of their favorite songs, Gravity, and reminisce about their transformational first practice together.

Rich Koehler, guitar, starts strumming an old cover of House of the Rising Sun and you see Aja Volkman excitedly rise to the occasion, holding her tea that immediately lost its warmth when she stepped out of The House of Blues. Her soul-wrenching, powerful voice gives the song new meaning and evokes immense feeling in the listener.

As we walk past Trump Tower to the House of Blues, Aja talks about how her music helps her find happiness in a world that’s not really easy for anyone. When we star approaching the House of Blues, Nico Vega dodges traffic with us and jumps into their song “Beast”. What a kick ass band filled with aware and amazing individuals. Ears to you!

Right now the interview is on for 6:15, but I am actually trying to push it back after their set to have a chance at a more lively session with more participation from the band members.

What I know about the band:

Local Natives (formerly known as Cavil at Rest) is an indie rock band based in Silver Lake, Los Angeles, USA. Their debut album, Gorilla Manor, was first released in the UK in November 2009, and later released in the US on February 16, 2010. The album received mostly positive reviews[1] and debuted in the Billboard 200 and at #3 in the New Artist Chart.[2]

Their sound has been described as “afropop-influenced guitars with hyperactive drumming and hooky three-part harmonies”.[3]. Clash Music has also described their style as psych-folk, or modern worldly folk.

The band came together in Orange County, where Kelcey Ayer, Ryan Hahn, and Taylor Rice attended high school. One year after graduating, they were joined by bassist Andy Hamm and drummer Matt Frazier. In December 2008, they all moved to a house in Silver Lake and started work on their debut album.[4]
The self-funded Gorilla Manor was recorded by Raymond Richards in his own Red Rockets Glare Studio, in West Los Angeles, and was produced by Richards and the band.[4]
Everything the band creates comes from a complete collaboration between their members, from songwriting to artwork.[4] Their debut album, Gorilla Manor, was named after the house they all shared in Orange County, where most of the album was written. “It was insanely messy and there were always friends over knocking around on guitars or our thrift store piano,” said Hahn. “It was an incredible experience and I’ll never forget that time.” [4]
The band started to attract the attention of the music press after playing nine shows at the 2009 SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, where initial reviews drew favorable comparisons to Arcade Fire, Fleet Foxes, and Vampire Weekend,[5] as well as “sort of a West Coast Grizzly Bear.”[6]
Before embarking on a European tour in support of the UK release of Gorilla Manor, the band served as opening act for Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, earning buzz and accolades for their harmonies, percussion, and songwriting.

Charles Bradley and Menahan Street Band Session

‘Soul’ mates Charles Bradley and Tom Brenneck (of the Dap Kings) met on Stanton Island back in 2000 and formed a connection, a friendship, and years later, the Menahan Street Band.

Influence comes strait from the guts of the earth in musicians Barbara Streisand, Diana Ross, and Curtis Mayfield who inspire and create. The lyrics of life and of love explode from emotion as they share their experiences with the world through music. As inauguration day approaches their message of creating a brighter future emerges in a new song, ‘At Last Victory Has Come’.

As ‘The World Goes Up in Flames’ Tom and Charles connect with each other, with music, and with the world encouraging us to set aside our pain and our blame and come together to ‘Make Things Right’.

So I’m trying to think of a good “feature” for Fridays, it’s gotta encompass that feeling of “Hell ya, Friday, done with work for 2 days, I’m going to see my friends, enjoy the weather, and party!” Side note: Obviously this is not the case if you’re in food service, but either way, you’ll enjoy the tunes. We starting off with possibly my favorite hip-hop remix of the past year or so, I was a pseudo fan of 99 problems before, but now, it’s over.

Jay-Z feat. The Dap Kings – 99 Problems (Remix)

The guitar riff they utilize throughout is…magic. I was enjoying this track before I realized how much I F-ing love Local Natives, this track is upbeat, chill and it makes me give that look where I bob my head no because it’s just that good.
Local Natives – Wide Eyes (Suckers Remix)

A great happy dancey track that gets the shoulders swaying too and fro. Includes some compressed hand drums, fun electro synths and a great breakdown towards the end that is simple, but makes you smile. Tanlines do a durn good remix as well (more to come in the following weeks.)
Tanlines – Real Life (Memory Tapes Remix)

I just recently started jamming out to this delicious duo and I usually stick to there acoustic tracks like this session from our friends at la blogotheque. Regardless, this is a pretty awesome remix courtesy of Toro Y Moi, if I don’t say so myself.

I’m shopping around the music videos section and I find a picture of 3 guys resembling a new age Experience. As someone who is very apprehensive of making such comparisons, I think it is a reasonable one. ANYWAY. They rock… like watching Detroit Rock City with a team of groupies, dealers, folk artists and BB King all loving each other simultaneously, (now that’s a whole lotta love, if I don’t say so myself.) And if you’re going to open up for Robert Randolph in Buffalo, you gotta have more than just a lil blues and a lil soul. Check out the video by the production team over at Creative Control.

New Video From The Pass!

As a recent Cincinnati export, I’ve heard plenty about Louisville, Kentucky, mainly great things about the people and the bars. But good music has never been at the center of this Louisville discussion… until now. The Pass is band of Kentuckians that has been making my booty shake since they released the singles Colors & Crosswalk Stereo (CLICK ON THE NAME FOR FREE DOWNLOADS.) Their new video for the track “Treatment Of The Sun” is just beautiful, I played this video a few times at a party recently, “who is this?” along with Phoenix comparisons ensued. I am a sucker for old school video and this, certainly is a perfect example of why old video is just so great (aren’t I good at articulating?.) Check out the new video from The Pass, who describe their influences as: the 80s with some 70s and 90 + great beats.

As Earphoria’s coverage of this weekends West Fest continues! Sunday, July 11th, at 8:30 pm, Glasgow’s own, We Were Promised Jetpacks will be gracing the stage on Chicago & Damen. This Scottish Quintet is currently on an international tour that takes them to Maryland, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Kentucky. and Chicago (IN LESS THAN ONE WEEK.) Post Elbow Room show on Monday the 12th, they head to the Apple Garden Festival in Diepholz Germany, needless to say, I think they’ve earned the title of road warrior for this tour.

We Were Promised Jet Packs Daytrotter Painting

Tracks like “Ships With Holes Will Sink” hit you with that quick percussion, driven bass and passionate vocals that snatch your attention immediately. These, accompanied by lyrics such as “Ships with holes will holes will sink. But I’ll swim.” The track really gives you a 360 degree reason to love their brand of (myspace titled) alternative / pop / other. Their new single is “A Far Cry.” It has a sort of echo chamber bellow that resonates a sort of hopelessness. It’s an intricate track that certainly deserves a few listens, “it grows on you” is a definite understatement.

For a band that puts their age as: “we are older than ghostbusters 2. we are younger than ghostbusters.” And updates social media sites with stuff like “we are currently watching the Ultimate Bourne Boxset.” They are certainly a dynamic rock quintet that is not to be missed this Sunday, (or ever.)

The Good Night Sleeps @ West Fest

I look at a line-up for any sort of festival and I think to myself, ok self, which bands do I want to check out?… [As I scan the list starting from the top.] This is why I want to convey my astonishment in the fact that as you review the line up for West Fest, you will find two bands that I have fell in love with, and they both play AT 1PM (aka they open both days.) YAWN I discussed with my last West Fest coverage post. The 2nd, is Caroline Smith & The Good Night Sleeps.

On Sunday, July 11th, Caroline Smith & The Good Night Sleeps grace the stage between Damen & Wood. When I gaze upon the photo above, thoughts of made-for-tv pop bands wander through my head, like Caroline Smith & Her Cohorts are the next big Disney trio. Thank god for talent, passion and Dr. Dre (will explain.) This beautiful young red head and her friends are now one of my favorite groups. It was all thanks to our friends over at Hooves On The Turf and this session that includes 2 of their original tracks and a Dr. Dre cover of Xxplosive that is not to be missed. As an added free online bonus, Caroline Smith & The Good Night Sleeps are featured in a Daytrotter session (HOORAY FOR FREE MUSIC.) As you hopefully know by now, West Fest, everyone’s favorite Chicago Avenue Festival, is rearing it’s happy head. What’s planned? Amazing food, local artistry and of course MUSIC!!! Earphoria is proud to be your West Fest music blog, making sure you realize each and every band is a headliner and 10 bucks is a measly price to pay for the spectacular line up, delivered by the folks over at Empty Bottle. We are kicking off the the fest coverage with a band that will greet you as you walk into the festival. This particular greeting will involve catchy rhythmic drumming, whimsical vocal harmonies and an overall sound that will make you think you paid 30-500 bucks for Yeasayer or Vampire Weekend tickets. YAWN goes on stage at 1 pm on Saturday and you will not regret getting to the festival a lil earlier than planned to check them out. These Chicago natives have certainly caught my attention and if they haven’t caught yours, they are opening up for Local Natives the following week at Lincoln Hall…(nuff said.)
